Soms, als je je vak vanuit een andere hoek bekijkt, wordt de noodzaak van gasdetectie ineens een stuk duidelijker. Daarom leek me het nuttig om het H2S gas eens onder de loep te nemen.

Het is een grote stap van studie naar bedrijfsleven. Ik weet het nog goed, ook al is het alweer 20 jaar geleden. Na het afronden van de HTS Werktuigbouw, werd ik bij Hitma intern opgeleid tot productspecialist. Natuurlijk was er na deze interne opleiding tijd en begeleiding nodig om de nodige ervaring op te doen, maar het specialistische advies dat ik na verloop van tijd kon geven, werd door onze relaties zeker gewaardeerd.

Toetreden tot de arbeidsmarkt na het afronden van een technische opleiding ging in 1996, net als nu, redelijk eenvoudig. Er was, in tegenstelling tot de eerste helft van de jaren negentig, meer vraag dan aanbod. Dus met mijn HTS-diploma op zak kon ik gerust eerst uitgebreid vakantie vieren, daarna inschrijven bij een uitzendbureau en vervolgens wachten op de uitnodigingen.

De snelle groei van waterstof als duurzame energiebron brengt complexe uitdagingen met zich mee. En van de meest gestelde vragen door bedrijven in deze sector is: "Hoe zorg ik ervoor dat mijn instrumentatie (druksensoren, druktransmitters en drukschakelaars) betrouwbaar blijven functioneren in een waterstofomgeving?" Het antwoord ligt in de keuze voor gespecialiseerde instrumentatie die specifiek ontworpen is om de unieke eigenschappen van waterstof (H2) te weerstaan.

The demand from the pharmaceutical industry for single use-process components and -assemblies is increasing sharply. This trend has been visible for years, but has been strengthened significantly because of the activities surrounding the production of COVID-19 vaccines. With aseptic single-use process systems, pharmaceuticals are capable of quickly introducing a vaccine for the lowest possible costs. As a result of the increased demand, the delivery times from the manufacturers of single-use-components and -assemblies has increased. Sometimes even up to more than six months. Buyers for pharmaceutical companies are now in front of the challenge to prevent the delay of the vaccine production due to lack of materials as much as possible.

DIN stands for Deutsches Institut fr Normung, meaning German Institute for Standardisation. This institute develops norms and standards and has been based in Berlin since 1917. Since then, it has undergone several name changes. Originally, German standards were called Deutsche Industrie-Normen or German industrial standards, but the term Das Ist Norm was also used. Only in the 1970s did the name DIN become the official symbol of technical standardisation in Germany.

More than a year after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the production of vaccines is fully in motion. The speed and large quantities of these productions ask for an extreme amount of single-use assemblies and components. This results in increasing delivery times and an enormous demand to quickly deliver. Due to a shortage of materials the delivery time of some products has increased to up to forty weeks. This has consequences for everyone in the pharmacy and biotech.

Safety and reliability are crucial in industrial processes involving pressure protection. The term audit has been coming up very frequently lately. Recently, we underwent an audit ourselves as part of renewing our ISO 9001 certificate. We also regularly welcome customers conducting their own audits, and in turn, we carry out audits on (new) suppliers. Essentially, an audit is a check to ensure that processes run smoothly and that we meet the required quality standards. Although this may sound simple, in practice it is often more complex. In 2016, the Isala Hospital in Zwolle started using an automatic syringe filling machine. As the first in Europe, their hospital pharmacy used this machine to centrally and mechanically prepare medicine in sterilized syringes. The Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven now followed after example and has also moved towards using this innovative, self-filled ready-to-use syringes. The project would be finished at the start of 2021, but due to the corona-crisis there was a necessity to start using the machine as fast as possible.

Waterstof is zeker in deze tijd van energietransitie een mogelijke optie ter vervanging van aardgas. Mijn collega Astrid van Ballegoy schreef hier al eerder een blog over en ik sprak hierover vorig jaar met de Gasunie. Zij willen in de toekomst hun aardgastransportnetwerk gebruiken voor het transport van waterstof. In de Eemshaven in Groningen zijn plannen voor een grote waterstoffabriek die uit elektriciteit van de offshore windmolens waterstof gaat produceren. Na transport naar de industrie, en misschien zelfs wel huishoudens, kan de waterstof weer worden omgezet naar elektra en warmte.

Voor het verduurzamen van de energievoorziening in Nederland wordt naarstig gezocht naar oplossingen om het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen terug te dringen. Waterstof speelt hierbij een belangrijke rol, maar waterstof is ook n van de meest vluchtige elementen die er bestaan. Om gevaarlijke situaties te voorkomen, gelden daarom zeer strikte regels voor de productie, verwerking, opslag en het transport van waterstof. Ook bij de keuze van beveiligingsmiddelen, zoals breekplaten en explosiepanelen, moet je rekening houden met de eigenschappen van waterstof.

Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, we have ended up in a remarkably bizarre world. With strict restrictions from the government and impressive work from the health care sector, we are trying to control the spread of the virus and cure as many patients as possible. At the same time the pharmaceutical industry is giving their all to develop a vaccine that will protect us against covid-19. Technological innovations, like a new type of membrane pump for (bio)pharmaceutical processes, can help with this.

Delivery times of single-use components and systems are recently under a lot of pressure. That is a risk factor for the continuity of processes, since single-use technology is essential for safe and fast production within the biopharmaceutical industry. I have also been hearing within the market that it is being considered to produce single-use assemblies abroad. Understandable, but ordering these process systems locally definitely presents benefits.

This year for the first time, C2W, a part of vakbladen.com, independently organised the Single-use Event in Eindhoven for professionals in the bioprocess industry. Naturally Hitma UltraPure was present. We attended various sessions with a number of colleagues.

Door ontgassen laat de binnenvaart een deel van die stoffen in de buitenlucht terecht komen. Dit zogenaamde varend ontgassen heeft gevolgen voor de gezondheid van de bemanning en omwonenden, het is niet goed voor het milieu n het veroorzaakt stankoverlast. Voormalig minister Van Nieuwenhuizen wilde daarom dat deze manier van ontgassen, als onderdeel van de verduurzaming van de binnenvaart, wordt aangepakt.

Onlangs bezocht ik de World Hydrogen Summit 2025 in Rotterdam een indrukwekkend driedaags evenement waar de internationale waterstofwereld samenkomt. Met ruim 15.000 bezoekers uit meer dan 130 landen en zon 700 exposanten was dit ht moment om de nieuwste innovaties rond waterstof van dichtbij te bekijken n te bespreken.

A better environment starts with yourself, which is why my family and I do our utmost to separate our waste neatly. And the more people do that, the better. Of course, residual waste still remains, but I have seen during my visits to waste-to-energy plants that it is still given value. In these plants, they burn the residual waste. The resulting heat is then recovered and converted into energy. A nice, environmentally friendly solution.

At the end of April, I visited Interphex (International Pharmaceutical Expo), a pharmaceutical and biotechnology fair held annually in New York. It is the most important event for learning about new technologies, products, and services related to pharmaceutical production, biotechnology, and drug development. The fair brings together thousands of professionals from around the world. Of course, my visit was mainly focused on developments in the field of single-use technology.

En in principe kan waterstof als alternatief dienen voor alle toepassingen waar nu aardgas wordt gebruikt. Maar er zijn investeringen nodig en er zijn vragen. Deze driejaarlijkse beurs is een van de grootste van Europa met diverse hallen vol met exposanten uit de chemische en farmaceutische industrie en de biotechnologie. De vorige editie in 2022 (een jaar uitgesteld vanwege corona) trok meer dan 70.000 bezoekers uit 127 verschillende landen. Dit jaar waren Hitma specialisten Katrien, Janna, Kevin, Rick en Patrick van de partij. Ik interviewde mijn collegas over hun ervaringen tijdens de beurs en heb de antwoorden samengevat.

Groene waterstof is waterstofgas dat wordt geproduceerd door elektrolyse van water met behulp van elektriciteit uit hernieuwbare bronnen, zoals wind- en zonne-energie. Tijdens dit proces wordt water gesplitst in waterstof en zuurstof, waarbij waterstof wordt opgeslagen voor later gebruik als brandstof en zuurstof wordt vrijgegeven als bijproduct. In tegenstelling tot grijze waterstof, die wordt geproduceerd uit fossiele brandstoffen, is groene waterstof een schone en duurzame energiebron die geen CO2-emissies of andere schadelijke verontreinigende stoffen produceert. In dit blog ga ik in op de voor- en nadelen van groene waterstof, o.a. op het gebied veiligheid.

In de krant De Morgen van 10 februari jongstleden stond een artikel van Sara VanDekerckhove met de kop: "Hepatitis C genezen moet goedkoper". Zij schreef dat de Ngo Dokters van de Wereld, die hun werk doen in ontwikkelingslanden, de prijs van Hepatitis C-geneesmiddelen veel te hoog vinden.

Het consortium De Nederlandse Waterstof Delta heeft zon 80 miljoen euro subsidie aangevraagd bij het Nationaal Groeifonds om de maakindustrie voor elektrolysers te ontwikkelen. Hiermee zou de waterstofeconomie in ons land sneller van de grond moeten komen.

Bij Hitma maakt het niet uit wie je aan de telefoon krijgt. Elke vraag krijgt een antwoord en elk probleem, hoe groot of hoe klein ook, wordt opgelost. Dat is de grondhouding. Both Hitma BV and our assembly partner UltraPure International successfully renewed their ISO 9001 certification in January 2025. Several departments were visited by auditor Henk Ricke and the audit was completed positively, without any findings and with valuable suggestions for improvements. This certification is not only a recognition of our hard work, but also a guarantee for our customers.

This trade fair, held every three years, is one of the largest in Europe with several halls full of exhibitors from the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. The 2022 edition (postponed for a year due to Covid) attracted more than 70,000 visitors from 127 different countries. Dat slangen in de natuur vervellen, weet je waarschijnlijk wel. Afhankelijk van de leeftijd van het reptiel zal het dier met regelmaat zijn oude vel uitdoen zodat plaatsgemaakt wordt voor een nieuwe huid. Eigenlijk kun je spreken van een verstreken houdbaarheid van de huid, doordat de slang is gegroeid. Ook bij processlangen, de niet-levende versie, heb je te maken met een houdbaarheidsdatum.

In dit blog behandel ik een cruciaal aspect van gasdetectie dat vaak over het hoofd wordt gezien: kruisgevoeligheden. Er is sprake van kruisgevoeligheid wanneer een ander gas dan het te bewaken/detecteren gas de door een elektrochemische sensor gegeven waarde kan benvloeden. Hierdoor dreigt niet alleen direct gevaar als er giftig gas aanwezig is en de sensor dit niet correct afleest, maar het kan ook leiden tot onnodige evacuaties en downtime door valse alarmen of overmetingen. Je kunt kruisgevoeligheid bij gasdetectoren niet volledig voorkomen, maar wel de impact ervan minimaliseren.

2016 saw the first hospital pharmacy in the Netherlands start using an automatic syringe-filling machine. This meant medicines could be prepared more quickly, and they had a longer shelf life. As a result, nursing staff no longer needed to prepare syringes on the wards. This is a nice example of how single-use technology can bring improvements in health care. Not only by saving costs, but also by freeing up staff to care for patients at the bedside.

The world struggles with enormous amounts of plastic waste for which we luckily discover more, but not enough, solutions. This also applies to the waste caused by our plastic assemblies for single use, which are used in the (bio)pharmaceutical industry. These materials are often burned (sometimes even together with our usual trash) once they end up in the waste stream. At Hitma we’re convinced that used plastics are a valuable material which can be used as a resource for other products. It would be a waste to just burn these reusable materials.

With the outbreak of a virus like Covid-19, are we going to save more lifes when the development of a vaccine in the Netherlands is the responsibility of the government? Prof. dr. Adam Cohen, professor of clinical pharmacology and founder of the CDHR (Centre for human drugs research), says that the fight against viruses should be nationalized. Cohen told in an interview with Dagblad Trouw on march 28th that we are not protected enough by the current privatized system of vaccine- and medicine development. He compares it with the army that protects us against attacks. The army isn’t privatized, so why should companies that need to protect us against virus attacks be privatized?

Hitma bestaat bijna 100 jaar. Verschillende (oud)-collegas schreven al blogs over hun Hitma-avonturen. Ik voeg daar graag nog een paar verhalen aan toe.

In mijn tijd als Hitma-directeur schreef ik al eerder over dit mooie bedrijf. Inmiddels zijn we een aantal jaren verder en kijk ik als directeur van Indutrade Benelux (de holding waar Hitma onder valt) vanuit een ander perspectief naar het bedrijf. Van een afstand wordt een beeld soms scherper. In het kader van 95 jaar Hitma deel ik graag mijn ervaringen met je.

In biofarmaceutische processen komen veelvuldig filtratiestappen voor. Denk maar aan clarificatie, ombuffering en concentratie van een product met TFF (tangential flow filtration) of het filtreren van een intermediair en het steriel filtreren van een eindproduct met NFF (normal flow filtration). Zoals bij elke stap, zijn hier enkele zaken die je in acht moet nemen om een succesvol resultaat te bekomen.

In farmaceutische processen worden kostbare biologische producten gekweekt en van de ene plaats naar de andere gepompt door een reeks kolommen, filters en andere apparaten. Dit om een ultrapuur en veilig medicijn te produceren dat direct aan de patint kan worden toegediend. Met dit in gedachten is het geen verrassing dat de regelgeving voor het produceren van zulke oplossingen extreem streng is. Lekken of andere storingen kunnen leiden tot het verspillen van kostbaar en duur product en gevaarlijke situaties voor degenen die ermee in contact komen. Om deze risico's te voorkomen en een veilige vloeistofoverdracht te garanderen, zijn stevige en lekvrije verbindingen in alle productiestappen essentieel.

In my role as a specialist in pressure protection, I am involved in projects across various sectors, including the chemical industry. My role involves advising industrial companies and engineering firms on spring-loaded safety valves for overpressure protection. When selecting, purchasing, and installing safety valves, it is not only about ensuring optimal safety for people, the environment, and surroundings, but also about minimizing product loss and saving energy. After all, overpressure leads to energy and product loss, which costs money.

With the world on the hunt for a coronavirus vaccine, now is the ideal time for me to write a blog about the rapid development of vaccines and the role of single-use technology in this process. My main focus is on the importance of choosing the right single-use process materials at the start of the development process; as early as possible in the first research phase.

In pharmaceutical processes, precious biological compounds are cultured and pumped from one place to another through a series of columns, filters and other devices. This to produce an ultrapure and safe medicine that can go straight into the patient. With that in mind, it is no surprise that the regulations for producing such solutions are extremely strict. Leaks or other malfunctions may lead to precious and expensive product being spilled and dangerous situations for those coming into contact with it. To prevent these risks and ensure safe fluid transfer, secure and leak-free connections in all production steps are essential.
